Oklahoma governor commutes Julius Jones’ demise sentence hours earlier than execution


Oklahoma’s governor has spared the lifetime of demise row inmate Julius Jones simply hours earlier than his scheduled execution. Governor Kevin Stitt on Thursday commuted Jones’ demise sentence to life in jail with out the potential of parole. 

In 1999, Jones was 19 years outdated when he was convicted for the homicide of businessman Paul Howell, who was shot within the driveway of his guardian’s house. Witnesses informed police they noticed a Black man with a crimson bandanna and 1 to 2 inches of hair shoot Howell and steal his SUV.

Three days later, Jones was arrested for matching the suspect’s description however his household claims his head was shaved and he was at house through the time of the taking pictures.

Jones and his household have argued that his demise row sentencing solely passed off due to injustices within the authorized system. They allege Jones was not allowed to testify about particular particulars and witnesses weren’t cross-examined due to an inexperienced public defender. Jones, now 41, was scheduled to be executed by deadly injection at 4 p.m. CT.
