The Impressions Co-Founder Was 87 – Billboard


Sam Gooden, one of many authentic members of the Chicago soul group The Impressions and a member of the Rock & Roll Corridor of Fame, has died. He was 87.

His daughter, Gina Griffin, stated Gooden died Thursday, a month shy of his 88th birthday, in his hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee, surrounded by his household. His demise was first reported by WRCB-TV in Chattanooga.

The Impressions fashioned within the Fifties after Gooden and brothers Richard and Arthur Brooks met Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler in Chicago. Butler sang baritone lead on their breakthrough file in 1958, the traditional ballad “For Your Treasured Love,” though lots of their hits featured Mayfield’s tenor, with Gooden singing bass behind him.

The Impressions remained a high group within the Sixties, recognized for his or her gospel-styled harmonies and socially aware songs. The group scored 39 Billboard Scorching 100 hits (together with three high 10s), 18 entries on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and 6 No. 1s and 20 high 10s on the Scorching R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Mayfield helped write lots of their hits, together with the extensively coated “Folks Get Prepared” (No. 14 on the Scorching 100), together with “Gypsy Lady” (No. 20), “Carry on Pushing” (No. 10), “We’re a Winner” (No. 14) and their highest-charting Scorching 100 hit “It’s All Proper” (No. 4). “Carry on Pushing” was nominated for greatest rhythm & blues recording on the seventh annual Grammy Awards in 1965 — the group’s lone nomination.

The Impressions had been inducted into the Rock & Roll Corridor of Fame in 1991. Seven years later, “Folks Get Prepared” was voted into the Grammy Corridor of Fame.

Mayfield left the group in 1970 for a solo profession, though he continued to jot down and assist produce for The Impressions. Gooden and fellow Chattanoogan Fred Money continued to sing as The Impressions together with different lead singers, together with Leroy Hutson. They toured till 2018.
